This 5 year old explains the bullshit of gender norms in marketing toys to kids. How is that a child can understand what most adults never really stop to think about?

The fact she’s pissed off makes me happy and sad. Happy that she realizes how bullshit it is and that she has a parent that is proud enough to video her comments but sad that it’s a reality that I constantly hear affirmed by parents when I work my shitty retail job.

Story time: This dad and his little girl come up to the return desk to return a “girl” toy the girl didn’t want because she wanted a car instead, and the dad made some comment in a negative tone to me about how “She only wants to play with boy toys, never girl toys” and this dichotomy seemed to make the girl upset and shamed. So I sort of ignored the comment and then I put her new toy in a bag and handed it directly to her and said “It’s a girls toy, so long as a girl plays with it.” To which she immediately perked up and left with her dad, looking very smug with her toy in her very own bag.
